The 2018 Maui honeymoon plan
The five-page itinerary that made a “relaxing” honeymoon look suspiciously like a very beautiful project plan.
Maui · June 10–17, 2018
Prepared in April 2018Toronto → Vancouver → Maui
WestJet: YYZ 3:00 p.m. → YVR 5:00 p.m.; YVR 6:30 p.m. → OGG 9:40 p.m. Pick up a midsize Hertz car at Kahului Airport.
Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa
Ocean-view room with one king bed at the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa on Kāʻanapali Beach.
Day at leisure + Old Lahaina Luau
Leisure day followed by the Old Lahaina Luau in the evening. The proposal listed dinner, show, lei greeting, drinks, crafts, imu ceremony and Polynesian entertainment.
Discover Molokini Snorkel
8:00 a.m.–1:30 p.m. catamaran snorkel outing to Molokini and a Maui coastal stop, with breakfast, lunch, beverages and snorkel equipment listed as included.
Kāʻanapali Zip Line
Eight-line zipline experience above the resort area. The proposal estimated roughly 3.5–4 hours and listed a guide, lunch, instruction and equipment.
Day at leisure + Haleakalā sunset
Leisure day followed by a guided Haleakalā sunset outing, summit stops, park admission and a three-course dinner listed in the proposal.
Hana Sky-Trek
Road to Hana by small luxury van with stops including Keʻanae, Waikani Falls and Waiʻānapanapa, followed by the return leg by A-Star helicopter. Lunch and beverages were listed as included.
Day at leisure
Nothing scheduled. In retrospect, one of the strongest lines in the whole itinerary.
Maui → Vancouver → Toronto
Drop off the rental car. WestJet OGG 10:40 p.m. → YVR 7:14 a.m. June 18; YVR 9:00 a.m. → YYZ 4:32 p.m.
What the email thread added
- We asked for a more relaxing trip with fewer activities.
- Lynda suggested keeping the luau and choosing either Hana Sky-Trek or the Molokini snorkel outing.
- Breakfast was not confirmed as included with the hotel.
- A daily resort fee was described as payable separately at the hotel.
- Our Canadian American Express points question turned out to be more complicated than the early estimate suggested; Lynda ultimately said she could not process the Canadian-card points redemption through her system.
The names behind the plan
I found Lynda Train through American Express Travel Insiders. At the time, she was an independent agent with ALTOUR American Express and an American Express Insider for Honeymoon and Romance. She helped us consider the flights, stay and activities together, then narrow down the plan.
I’ve linked the providers above so you can check their current offerings. The proposal and prices on this page are from 2018.
